What Do Colors Mean And How Do They Influence Our Lives

What colors mean and the psychological, emotional, and physical effects on your body are discussed in detail in this article.

what do colors mean

Each of us has experienced a specific color associated with a certain feeling. For example, red when we were angry, white when we felt fear, yellow when jealousy or envy took over us, blue when we felt our body frozen, we “saw” everything in pink when we were in love, or black when negativity overtook us.

All these happen because our body produces colors that create vibrations determined by our feelings, thoughts, words, and actions. Even the food we eat generates a specific color inside us.

COLORS AND THEIR SUBTLE REALITY

Each color from the visible spectrum has a specific frequency, creating certain moods and influencing people’s decisions and perceptions. On the other hand, colors can restore the balance of non-harmonic waves physically, mentally, and emotionally.

Each color lives by its mysterious life. – Wassily Kandinsky –

Everything has an internal and external effect on us, so we must be careful what colors we incorporate into everyday life through food, clothing, and home decorations. Each person prefers specific colors because they have their roots in culture or personal experience. They can also be related to their character, childhood memories, or how colors make them feel in certain situations. But many people eliminate some colors without knowing how they can positively influence their lives.

Indeed, you also have favorite or less appreciated colors. Therefore, by reading this article, you will understand how to choose and use them for abundance and general well-being. You will know what colors to use to recharge your energy, regain peace of mind, change your mood, or even heal yourself through color meditation.

It will be a slightly longer reading, so enjoy a cup of coffee, tea, or cappuccino and relax by discovering the colors of your subtle reality.

PSYCHOLOGICAL, EMOTIONAL, AND PHYSICAL EFFECTS OF COLORS

What Do Colors Mean

RED

It is a powerful, dynamic color that gives the person who uses it confidence, motivation, strength, and courage. It is associated with passion and arousal because it revitalizes and stimulates sexuality.

Red color can stimulate low vital energy and remove blockages due to fatigue, helping in some cases of degeneration. It provides a general state of well-being and is very useful when you have a low metabolism.

It regulates digestion, strengthens detoxification processes, and increases respiration and blood pressure.

Red is the ultimate cure for sadness. – Bill Blars –

However, if used excessively, it leads to aggression, hatred, negative mood, insecurity, and selfishness.

❌ It is not recommended to meditate with red and red scarlet colors because they can generate intense reactions such as aggression, sudden warming, moments of hatred, and excessive impulsivity!

SCARLET RED

It is considered an intense color that tones the heart and stimulates the activity of the kidneys and adrenal glands. Scarlet red has aphrodisiac effects and acts emotionally and sexually by enabling the reproductive organs. It can also be used to relieve asthma and sinusitis.

Used in excess, scarlet red intensifies sexual desire, generating a tendency to aggression and violence. It can also lead to high blood pressure.

❌ Not recommended for Meditation!

What Do Colors Mean

ORANGE

It is an active and vibrant color that helps with depression, sadness, disappointment, and confusion. The orange will bring serenity, motivation, a positive attitude, and the joy of living and valuing yourself.

In nutrition, it helps to regain lost appetite. Physically reduces abdominal spasms and activates lazy digestion and kidney function.

Used too much, the orange color can create confusion, lack of goals, envy, jealousy, and desire for possessiveness.

✔ Meditation with an orange color is favorable to stimulating appetite, and in case of pregnancy, it helps produce breast milk.

YELLOW

Its warm, bright color brings joy, serenity, optimism, and happiness. It represents the unleashed spirit, the intellect, and an open and agile mind with a capacity for analysis.

Yellow corresponds to skill, confidence, exchange of ideas, inspiration, and freedom of movement. It develops your intelligence, knowledge, learning skills, frankness, and security in your relationships with people.

Using yellow helps you be open to intellect and spirituality and allows you to understand, have initiative, and make practical sense.

It can be used to overcome fear and panic attacks as it develops an interest in the present moment. Physically, it strengthens the solar plexus and lymphatic flow, helps the circulation of glandular and cerebral fluids, and detoxifies the liver and kidneys.

You choose your color, you choose your mood. If you are depressed you put some bright yellow and suddenly you are happy. – Philippe Starck –

Using it too much leads to repression of feelings, domination, envy, jealousy, and misunderstanding.

✔ To strengthen your mental activity and the organs and glands of the body, meditate with the yellow color. Also, being a potent color through Meditation helps you remove sadness and fears.

What Do Colors Mean

GREEN

It has the strongest and fastest healing force because it helps absorb oxygen like chlorophyll. The green color brings balance and harmony to the body, mind, and soul.

It balances mood swings, overcomes impatience and anxiety, and strengthens self-esteem. Being the color of nature, it reflects life and peace.

Green is related to the financial situation and shows increased income and wealth. So, it is excellent to use it for economic achievements.

Although it brings powerful benefits, excessive use leads to the desire for manipulation and control and abuse of power over others and can create heart and circulatory problems.

✔ The mediation with green color is recommended to neutralize negative sensations and emotions and to support healing from an illness.

TURQUOISE

Supports creativity, provides fluency in communication, and clarity in verbal expression. It strengthens the mood when you are mentally tired or stressed and balances non-harmonic emotions, especially those you do not want to recognize.

If your activity occurs in front of a computer or similar devices, turquoise helps you with your digital communication skills.

Physically, turquoise is a protector of the thyroid gland.

Excessive use leads to ignorance, impatience, critical attitude, and difficulty in language and communication.

✔ Because turquoise is a color that represents communication, it is recommended to meditate with it to release energy, artistic knowledge, and creativity in communication. Also, if you feel tired and have headaches, Meditation with a turquoise color relieves these symptoms.

What Do Colors Mean

BLUE

It symbolizes the subconscious, the inner limitation, and the depth of the soul. It corresponds to introversion and a reserved attitude. Blue has a direct effect on the nervous system. It soothes irritability and nervousness, clarifies ideas, and relaxes physically and emotionally. That is why it is used in treatments against addictions and excessive appetite.

Blue color promotes a relaxing sleep, lowers blood pressure, and blocks inflammatory processes.

Used too much, the blue color leads to indifference, fatigue, and depression and increases the desire for rest.

✔ To strengthen the nervous system or induce relaxation, harmony, and well-being, meditating with blue and indigo colors is recommended. It is also favorable to meditate in case of high blood pressure and tumors.

INDIGO-BLUE

Indigo-blue color acts as a sedative in case of nerve irritation and calms restless breathing and overactive thyroid gland. Reduces severe pain, helps to prevent the spread of eczema, and promotes wound healing.

In excess, the indigo-blue color leads to distancing and a lack of interest in the present, reduces the processing of ideas, and can give you headaches, nightmares, and eye problems.

✔ It is recommended for Meditation.

What Do Colors Mean

VIOLET

Violet is known as the color of purification. It has the highest vibratory frequency, which is why it symbolizes spirituality, alchemy, and metaphysics—a color of intuition and extrasensory perception, which develops imagination and inspiration.

Violet color has a chromatic force that purifies and balances vibration, being the only color that makes both hemispheres of the brain work harmoniously balanced. Also, all the disharmonies between the opposite poles such as yin and yang, male and female, active and passive, are balanced with the healing power of the violet color.

The person who uses the violet color expresses loyalty, courage, and mystery, but if he uses it excessively, he will face mental confusion, lack of concentration, and spontaneity.

✔ Before moving on to physical, mental, or emotional healing, purifying and detoxifying the body by Meditation with a violet color is recommended. In this way, you will cleanse the body of all “collected garbage” (toxins, tension, suffering, disappointments, negative emotions and thoughts, fears, and wounds of the past) and leave it prepared for a new beginning.

PURPLE

It is a recommended color for rest areas, as it induces sleep and reduces heart rate. Always try to balance rest and activity; you will see how it will help you keep your distance from daily stress.

All the other colors are just colors, but purple seems to have a soul. When you look at it, it’s looking back at you. – Uniek Swain

Used in excess, the purple color leads to arrogance, an excessive sense of justice and control, and slow kidney activity.

✔ If you suffer from insomnia or migraines, Meditation with purple color will facilitate your sleep and relieve the different types of headaches.

What Do Colors Mean

WHITE

It embodies all the visible spectrum colors, so it is not considered a color but a quintessence that represents purity, innocence, and integrity. It is recommended to use it in case of new beginnings.

The effect of the white is powerful, a healing effect on consciousness, strengthening the processes of clarity and purification.

Physically, it drains the body and helps to have smooth and youthful skin.

Used in excess, it causes loneliness, emptiness, and isolation.

❌ Although Meditation with white has a fast healing effect, it can generate extreme reactions, especially for those without solid experience in Meditation. If it is so, I do not recommend it!

LIME

Eliminates psychosomatic blockages, promotes the proper functioning of the motor nervous system, and stimulates the general flow of the brain. Along with other healing procedures, it helps fight Alzheimer’s.

Using lime color can eliminate fatigue and strengthen the immune system and self-esteem. It can have a stimulating effect on the thymus gland and digestive system, acting as a laxative.

Used in excess, it leads to selfishness, mental changes, and the calculated use of feelings.

✔ The Meditation with lime color stimulates your brain activity and immune system. It helps you eliminate things and emotions repressed from the past, supporting healing from them. It is recommended to meditate whenever you have emotional problems or in case of changes (change of home, change of job, etc.).

What Do Colors Mean

PINK

Pink is a color of hope. It represents personal and unconditional affection and love, and it helps in personal forgiveness and compassion for others. It has a calming and harmonizing effect, eliminating aggression. Used in excess, the pink color expresses immaturity and lack of strength.

✔ It is recommended to meditate with the pink color whenever you are forgiving someone and it is difficult for you to do so or whenever you want to alleviate the suffering of a disappointment from the past.

BROWN

It represents the earth, hence the association of the person who uses the brown color as a person with feet on the ground, secure, mature, and robust.

Brown is a color that creates a neutral, comfortable state that communicates motivation, fidelity, support, security, and protection.

Used in excess, the brown color creates a feeling of tension.

✔ The Meditation with a light brown color is recommended for people whose minds are restless and who find it challenging to stay focused.

What Do Colors Mean

GOLDEN

Golden color transmits positive and overflowing energy, and it is considered the color of trust, kindness, and mercy, putting aside the ego and giving strength to help those around you. It is also associated with luxury, abundance, and prosperity.

Using too much golden color leads to selfishness and exaggerated pride.

✔ The Meditation with the golden color helps you recharge with cosmic energy, strengthening your self-esteem and self-confidence to live more vitality.

BLACK

It is not considered a color but a state of blockage that expresses spiritual inactivity, hidden aggression, and power demand. Represents the darkness and disconnection from all chromatic stimuli, emphasizing the need for mental and physical rest.

Through this disconnection, darkness helps to find self-peace. Therefore, night sleep, in total darkness, is essential to facilitate complete relaxation, both physical and mental.

Black is considered a state of reservation, expressing mystery, sophistication, seriousness, control, and independence.

Being a powerful state, whoever persists too long can cause personal feelings of sadness and negativity.

❌ Black being a state that represents the blockage, it is certainly not recommended for Meditation.

  1. What a wealth of information here! I’m bookmarking this post to refer back to. I’ve studied colors and their effects on people and animals. But your descriptions have given me even more insight, especially with regard to the secondary and more blended shades.

While you discuss the colors and shades to use for meditation, these are also useful for determining colors for websites, book covers, and even room decor.

Thanks for a very informative post!

    1. Hello Diane,

Thank you for your appreciation. I’m glad we have a common interest, we can even exchange ideas. Chromatics is an interesting topic, and I can say that it is amazing how the power of colors can influence the existence of each of us.

While working with children, I noticed that many of them had an attraction for yellow objects. Instead, my dogs are attracted to orange and red colors (They are hyperactive dogs😄). My favorite is green army color. For each of us, color is representing something, and it influences us differently.

Also the chromatic is used in sales for years, therefore its use can attract buyers, or it can keep them at a distance.

Thank you for stopping by, Diane. You are more than welcome to come back for new updates.

  2. It is a very nice article relating to meditation with colors influencing different emotional, physical, and mental  behaviour of humans. The people doing meditation should definitely read your article so that they will find the more effective results of meditation. I am using white color robe and  white color room while meditating. Now I found I should use other colors suitable for my behavioural conditions. Thank you for sharing a great ariticle.

    1. Hello Prabakaran,

I’m glad to see you here. Thank you for stopping by. I can deduce from what you said, that you have a constant meditation program, so you are not a beginner. Did I get it right? As I said in the article, personally as a yoga instructor, I do not recommend the meditation with white color to beginners.

It can be a meditation with strong reactions, for which a beginner is not prepared. There is a difference between meditating with white color, in sense that you visualize how that color passes through your whole body, in every each organ to heal,  and meditating in a white environment. Are two different things.

Of course, a completely white environment can also negatively affect your mental state. Important thing is how you feel after meditation. What I can recommend is to bring in the meditation room a few objects of different colors that support relaxation and healing, to balance a little bit the environment.

  3. What a wonderful read. Meditation, yoga and looking after ourselves are so important in this day and age and your site has give a whole new perspective to all of this. Colours are so important to how we feel and what they say about us. They really make a difference to our environment and how we fee at any particular moment of the day. Dare I say they can make us or break us in certain situations. Lovely site which I will continue to follow.

    1. Hi Sofia,

You are very kind, thank you for your appreciation. I’m glad you enjoyed reading, so you are more than welcome to come back for new updates. Thanks for stopping by.

  4. Hello Diana,

Very interesting stuff! I have heard of aromatherapy and people using sounds to ease their stress. I had no idea colors were so influential.

I will use this information in the future. I have always used different colors on my websites to make them attractive but knowing this information could be what I needed to influence my audience in the direction I need.

    Thanks so much!

    Chad

    1. Hello Chad,

I’m glad to see you here. Thank you for stopping by. Indeed chromotherapy, or known as color therapy, has been used for centuries to reduce pain, relieve stress, relieve disease symptoms, and balance physical, emotional, mental and spiritual energy. Therefore,  knowing the power of colors, we can use it independently to our advantage in everyday life.

On the other hand, chromatics can be used both personally and professionally. In sales, advertising, chromatics play an important role using it in diagrams, flyers, banners,  Web design etc, to delight and attract visually, and to stimulate and convey certain sensations. So, yes, it is a very good idea to make use of colors on your website. Have fun playing with the colors.😉

  5. Hello Diana, I read your article and learn many new things about the colors that I didn’t know up to now. I don’t know that Turquase color can protect my thyroid gland, and I have nodus in my thyroid, but until now, its functionality is all good. So, I’m going to use Turquoise from now on to protect my thyroid. And about blue, I paint my bedroom walls with two diverse tonalities of blue, and after reading that it helps in a relaxing sleep, I’m glad I have done it.
Thank you very much for this beautiful article.

    1. Hello Alketa,

Thank you for reading the article and sharing your experience with us. Using turquoise will help keep your thyroid gland under control as long as you do not overuse it. A scarf, maybe a blouse, a brooch, or a watch, could be some ideas.

I must say that you made a good choice in using two shades of blue on the bedroom walls. Many people make the mistake of coloring all the walls of the bedroom in a single shade of blue, which in this case can lead not only to rest, but to a continuous desire for sleep, over and over again.

Personally, I painted the walls of my bedroom in a combination of violet and purple, and I must say that I have not had a sleep of such good quality, so restful, in years.
